Places to visit in Cornwall

Why stay in Marazion?

The ancient market town of Marazion is an excellent base for exploring the many vibrant attractions of Cornwall. Marazion itself has a lot to offer the visitor.

St. Michael's Mount

The world-famous St. Michael's Mount is just a quarter of a mile away, accessed by foot at low water or regular ferry service. With its spectacular castle dating back to the 12th century in parts, the island is a delight to visit. The island village has a charming Victorian harbour and wonderful views of Mount's Bay.

St Michael's Mount

St. Michael's Mount is a National Trust property and is open every day from April to October. Admission is free to National Trust members (including weekends).

Mount's BayWindsurfing in Mount's Bay

Of course, being situated in Mount's Bay (one of the seven best bays in the world), there are many water-based things to do. Marazion itself offers a clean, safe sandy bathing beach that is dog-free in the summer months. Children can keep themselves amused at the play area near the beach and at a small fun-fair with rides that operates during the summer.

Further away from the town, windsurfing and kitesurfing are available with the seas of Mount's Bay offering some of the best conditions in Europe.

Mount's Bay Sailing Club welcomes visiting sailors. Call 01736 710620 or visit their web site for further information.

Walking and cycling

Marazion is a great place to stay if you are a keen (or casual) walker or cyclist. Situated on the South West Coast Path, Cornwall Coastal Path and the Pilgrim's way, Marazion offers easy access to some of the most spectacular coastal scenery in the UK. There is also a whole network of local footpaths and bridleways to explore.

The Cornish Way cycle path provides an easy, safe cycle route from Marazion to Penzance, Newlyn and Mousehole or further afield.

Marazion Marsh nature reserve An Egret on Marazion Marsh nature reserve

The RSPB operates Marazion Marsh reserve with Cornwall's largest reedbed with breeding Reed, Sedge and Cetti's Warblers, and a huge variety of plants and insects. In August and September, two special birds visit on migration - the spotted crake and aquatic warbler. The reserve is open at all times, with warden-guided walks from May to September.

Marazion - the town

Marazion has an eclectic mix of galleries, shops, post office, hotels, pubs and cafés. The town takes pride in its appearance and a 'Marazion in bloom' competition ensures many houses have attractive floral displays during the summer. In winter, the same spirit shines through the town with Christmas lights.

The town museum is open daily from April to September in the former fire station. Many interesting pictures and artefacts depict life in and around Marazion - it also houses the cell for the town gaol.
